Liberal Democrats win 'Culture Value Statement'

South Norfolk Liberal Democrats were successful in getting another motion unanimously passed by District Council in the meeting held on Monday 20th July.
Cllr Carmina McConnell of South Wymondham ward brought the motion to ‘request that the Council endorses the Norfolk and Suffolk Culture Board’s May 2026 Culture Value Statement.’

Cllr McConnell explained to fellow councillors that the Culture Value Statement outlined five core values of cultural life and ‘the role of culture in public life and in the new public institutions being built in Norfolk and Suffolk.’

As the statement was originally launched in Parliament in June, Cllr McConnell asked the Council to now endorse the statement to show the Council’s commitment to culture.

Cllr McConnell said culture is not a luxury and is a way of bringing people and communities together through artists, musicians, makers and performers. The Statement calls for culture to be ‘available to everyone, that it has a value in its own right, belongs at the heart of public life, that it is a shared responsibility and must endure.’

The motion, unanimously voted through by all councillors present, means that South Norfolk Council leader will sign and endorse the Statement on behalf of council members.
